the history
Bronaar Farms was founded as a sustainable, independent farming enterprise in 1965 by Hauptfleisch van der Merwe. It has its roots in the well-known farm Boplaas, which has been in the Van der Merwe family since 1743. The Van der Merwes have lived and farmed in the Koue Bokkeveld for over two centuries, and today, the current shareholders represent the ninth generation of stewardship on this fertile land.
Ribbokskloof became part of the Bronaar story in 2019, when the Van der Merwe family purchased the adjacent farm. While the private campsite already existed under the previous owner, the cottages were only transformed in 2025 – renovated from the farm’s original office building into the charming retreats they are today.
working farm
Bronaar is a proudly independent, working farm in the Koue Bokkeveld region, known for its cool climate and fertile soil. The farm produces a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, with apples, pears, onions, and potatoes forming the core of its seasonal output.
Farming here is guided by a long-standing commitment to sustainability, community, and innovation. Generations of knowledge, combined with modern practices delivers high-quality produce that supports both local markets and export demand.
Visitors staying at Ribbokskloof get a glimpse of real farm life—set to the quiet rhythm of tractors in the distance and changing mountain light overhead.
the foundation
Beyond the fields, Bronaar’s commitment to community development shines through the Bronaar Foundation. Established to provide financial support for education, career development, sports, and cultural opportunities, the foundation has invested R2.5 million since 2008, supporting 46 students across various institutions.
This initiative underscores Bronaar’s belief in nurturing potential and fostering growth beyond agriculture.
